International Forum on New Technologies and Applications of Insect Radar 2019 Held at BIT

  Beijing Institute of Technology, Oct 8, 2019: September 25th The International Forum on New Technologies and Applications of Insect Radar, hosted by the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) and technically directed by the Society of signal processing of the Chinese Electronic Society and the Radar Society of the Chinese Electronic Society, will be held in conference room 205 of the BIT.

  

  The forum, initiated by more than 20 world-renowned experts in the field of insect radar, aims to introduce the research hotspots and the development and application of advanced technologies in the field of insect radar to build a platform for academic exchange and sharing among experts and scholars in this field. The experts unanimously recommended the BIT as the host of the forum.

  The forum was chaired by Prof. Long Teng, vice president of BIT, Prof. Hu Cheng, vice president of BIT, and Associate Prof. Wang Rui, Chairman of the Program Committee. At the same time, they invited Prof. Donald Reynolds, a radar entomologist from the University of Greenwich, England, Prof. Alistair Drake from the University of New South Wales, Australia, Prof. Jeff Kelly from the University of Oklahoma, USA, and Associate Prof. Jason Chapman from the University of Exeter, UK, Associate Prof. Jeff Buler from the University of Delaware, Associate Prof. Judy Shamoun-Baranes from the University of Amsterdam in Netherlands, Associate Prof. Dan Sheldon from the University of Massachusetts, Assistant Prof. Phil Stepanian from the University of Notre Dame, and Dr. Adriaan Dokter from Cornell University, USA, Dr. Cecilia Nilsson of Cornell University, USA, Dr. Felix Liechti from the Swiss Bird Institute as well as more than 20 experts and scholars from 19 universities and scientific research units, including the University of Oxford, the Lausanne Institute, Colorado State University, the University of Tennessee, University of New South Wales, the University of Haifa in Israel, the Swiss Bird Research Center, the Italian Bird Research Center, the Plague Locust Commission of Australia, the Institute of Plant Protection of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Institute of Plant Protection of the Henan Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and the Chinese Korobin Radar Technology Co. They did the reports and communication about this topic.

  

  The opening ceremony and the first half of the forum were presided over by BIT Prof. Hu Cheng, the chairman of the Procedure Committee, and the second half was presided over by associate Prof. Wang Rui.

  

  The forum attracted more than 50 domestic experts and scholars in the field of insect radar and has arranged for nine foreign experts to make a special invitation report. Prof. Alistair Drake from the University of New South Wales, Australia, has introduced a new method to retrieve the flight parameters of insects from the zenith-pointing linearly polarized conical scanning radar signals. Dr Cecilia Nilsson from Cornell University in the US, showed evidence of insect migration in the US weather radar network and a typical pattern of daytime activity. Judy Shamoun-Baranes, associate Prof. at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, introduced the latest developments in the European weather radar network for monitoring the ecology of the air. Phil Stepanian, Assistant Prof. at the University of Notre Dame, USA, introduced a new method to retrieve the morphological parameters of insects from the polarimetric and phase changes of weather radar. Dr. Adriaan Dokter from Cornell University in the US presented the challenges and opportunities of using the US weather radar network to monitor changes in bird and insect populations. Prof. Jeff Kelly of the University of Oklahoma in the United States described new developments in the use of the United States weather radar network to monitor changes in aerial insectivorous populations. Jeff Buler, an associate professor at the University of Delaware, describes how the use of weather radar to monitor the distribution of waterfowl can help food safety. Dr. Felix Liechti from the Swiss Institute of ornithology presented new findings on the use of Operational bird-detection radar to monitor local bird activity. Jason Chapman, associate professor at the University of Exeter, UK, described the ecological impact of large scale insect migrations. The contents of the report are rich and colorful, and the experts of the report interact with the audience warmly.

  The forum is the first successful international forum on the new technology and application of insect radar. It provides a platform for face-to-face academic exchanges between experts and scholars in the field of insect radar at home and abroad for domestic and foreign well-known experts to lay a foundation for cooperation as well. The support of many international famous experts in the field of radar entomology will also promote the development of our university in the field of migration radar research.
