BIT wins awards in Creative Designs Collection for Lunar Exploration Loading

    On September 20, the Creative Designs Collection for Lunar Exploration Loading Award Ceremony was held in China Science and Technology Museum. The creative design programs, Device for Observing the Behavior of Ant Colony under Microgravity, and Moon-Supplied Music Box-- Experimental Equipment for Sound Transmission from the far side of the moon, by School of Life Science of Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) and School of Aerospace Engineering of BIT respectively were shortlisted as the national top 20 programs, and later won the second prize and the third prize respectively. Moreover, Hao Mengyang, a student from BIT School of Law, participated in the program, Miniature Electric Rocket-- Four-Axis Flight Probe, and won the third prize. Besides, the sponsor granted “The Best Organizer Award” to three associations, such as the Youth League Committee of BIT, as a token of gratitude for their dedication to the event.

 

 

    The Creative Designs Collection for Lunar Exploration Loading was co-hosted by State Administration of Science, National Space Administration, Ministry of Education, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Central Committee of the Communist Young League and China Association for Science and Technology in December 2015. It aimed at stimulating the passion of university students, high school students and technology enthusiasts, and encouraging the public to engage in the scientific innovation activities.

 


    The event collected 257 domestic creative design programs in all but only 20 programs whose innovation was outstanding and popularization of science was good were selected as the award-winning ones. Among these programs, 3 of them won the first prize, 7 of them received the second prize and the rest were awarded the third prize. These programs will also become the alternatives of scientific loading lunar exploration follow-up mission.

 

 

    Device for Observing the Behavior of Ant Colony under Microgravity is mainly about the ability of ants to explore the unknown space, the ability to search for foods, and their ways of cooperation, communication and directional “way finding”. Besides all that, it talked about the influence which environmental factors such as radiation, microgravity, aircraft taking-off and landing, has on the related neuro genes and immune genes of ants in a short-term flight around the moon.

 

 

     In the article, Moon-Supplied Music Box-- Experimental Equipment for Sound Transmission from the far side of the moon, the research team expected to make use of the High Vacuum environment on the surface of the moon, so that they could re-conduct the classic physics experiment, and present the mechanical wave characteristics of the acoustic waves in a more intuitive way.

 

 

    The researchers of the program, Miniature Electric Rocket-- Four-Axis Flight Probe, took an existing four-axis flight probe as design model, changed the driving apparatus to an ion propulsion system which was efficient on moon, and added different kinds of electronic sensors and collecting devices,  which could work stably on lunar rover, on the probe. Scientist only need to program the probe on the earth so as to realize missions like aerological sounding nearby the moon, sampling and smart barrier-shielding.

 

    Since the Creative Designs Collection for Lunar Exploration Loading was carried out, Youth League Committee of BIT has been viewing the activity as an effective carrier to encourage the undergraduates to cultivate interest in science and inspire creative spirits. Students were mobilized to attend the competition, and Science Research Institute organized experts from BIT and other universities to give the participants guidance and support about their projects. During the event, research teams of BIT had won many prizes, which was regarded as an encouragement and approval to the innovation work of BIT.
