BIT Achieved Success at 2016 International Contest of Innovation

  2016 is a year of the harvest of innovation and entrepreneurship for the School of Mechatronical Engineering of Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT). Following the expeditious implementation of national strategy of innovation-driven development, a new wave of popular entrepreneurship and innovation has been taken universally in universities and colleges. In response to the nation’s call, initiated by the leaders of the School of Mechatronical Engineering of BIT, the school carved out one way of innovation and entrepreneurship of its own.

 

  After the School of Mechatronical Engineering attended the 9th International Contest of innovation (iCAN) in 2005, the school gradually formed the education system of innovation and entrepreneurship, and officially set up the plaque—Chinese Undergraduate iCAN Practice Base, which is in the charge of professor Lou Wenzhong. In 2016, with the great support of the school leaders, professor Lou Wenzhong, lecturer Feng Yue, Mao Ruizhi, and Doctor Jin Xin completed the establishment of the curriculum—Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice together. The entrepreneurial team cultivated by the curriculum achieved favorable results at various contests.

 

  After 5 months of active preparation, strict screening, and rounds of heated competitions, the school eventually selected 4 teams to attend the iCAN Beijing regional qualifier.

 

  In early September, 2016, iCAN Beijing regional qualifier was hold at Entrepreneur's Training Camp, Peking University in Fangshan District. Through the competitions with more than 4000 teams across the country, the School of Mechatronical Engineering won prizes, among which is the second prize the team Intellectual Table Tennis Collection Vehicle won in Beijing reginal competition, the teams Eagle Flapping Wing Flight Vehicle in Bionics, Fill the World with Love (Sign Language Interpretation Master), and Assistant Escape System when Car Falling into Water won the first prize in Beijing regional competition, and smoothly attended China final.

  In October, 2016, after improvement and direction by teachers of the school, the teams attended the 3-day final with more than 500 teams qualified for the final, and eventually stood out from the competition. The team Fill the World with Love (Sign Language Interpretation Master) won the second prize in 2016 10th iCAN, the teams Eagle Flapping Wing Flight Vehicle in Bionics and Assistant Escape System when Car Falling into Water won the third prize in iCAN. Both of the teams showed the spirit of the School of Mechatronical Engineering.

 

  

 

  From October 12 to 16, 2016, the 9th BIT Scientific Innovation and Entrepreneurship Publicity Week was hold successfully in Liangxiang Campus, as award-winning works of iCAN, Eagle Flapping Wing Flight Vehicle in Bionics, Fill the World with Love (Sign Language Interpretation Master), and Assistant Escape System when Car Falling into Water were selected as excellent works of scientific competition and innovative activities of 2016, and on display at the Xu Teli Library on Liangxiang Campus. On the morning of October 16, the defense of BIT Undergraduate Innovation Program approved in 2015 was smoothly hold. Through the review on site by experts, Eagle Flapping Wing Flight Vehicle in Bionics, Fill the World with Love (Sign Language Interpretation Master), and Assistant Escape System when Car Falling into Water won the Excellence Prize in University’s Undergraduate Training Program for Innovation (17 teams within the whole school won the prize). Meanwhile, Eagle Flapping Wing Flight Vehicle in Bionics was honored with the prize Students’ Favorite Scientific Work.

 

  

 

  In November, 2016, with excellent performance, Eagle Flapping Wing Flight Vehicle in Bionics and Assistant Escape System when Car Falling into Water were honored with the third prize in the 2016 Beijing area selection of outstanding undergraduate entrepreneurial team hold by Beijing Municipal Commission of Education, and titled “Outstanding Entrepreneurial Team of Beijing”. Fill the World with Love (Sign Language Interpretation Master) won the “potential award”. At the same time, the three teams were invited as the delegation of BIT to attend the 5th College Students Scientific Innovation Work and Patent Exhibition hold in Gengdan Institute of Beijing University of Technology from December 3 to 4, 2016. In the exhibition, the three works won the consistent praise of participating experts and enterprise representatives, who offered numbers of useful suggestions as well.

 

  The team Generator Speed Control Equipment Based on Magnetorheological Material leaded by Lecturer Dai Jun of the School of Mechatronical Engineering was invited as well, which won more than one awards in some large scale competitions. In the exhibition, professor Lou Wenzhong and lecturer Dai Jun talked in-depth, established cooperation relationship, and will conduct collaborative scientific innovation teaching.   Following the iCAN, in the 2016 undergraduate innovation training program, strongly recommended by the school teaching leading secretary, professor Lou Wenzhong as the innovation and entrepreneurship adviser of the School of Mechatronical Engineering, leading doctor Jin Xin, selected 200 students and established 40 innovation and entrepreneurship teams by screening the applicant undergraduates across campus, and chose subjects for them. Simultaneously, as 2016-2017 academic year first semester Liangxiang college students innovation adviser, professor Lou Wenzhong went to Liangxiang undergraduate innovation base every week to offer innovation and entrepreneurship guidance and answer questions for freshmen and sophomores, making adequate preparations for 2017 iCAN.

 

  In 2016, the School of Mechatronical Engineering of BIT make a solid and strong step on the way of innovation and entrepreneurship. Through the consistent endeavor by team members, unity, and the industrious devotion of advisers, the several teams performed admirably, won reputation for BIT and the School of Mechatronical Engineering, laying a solid foundation for the following establishment and cultivation of innovation and entrepreneurship teams of the School of Mechatronical Engineering, as well as helping BIT realize the goal of double first-class university.
