BIT Innovation Loading Device Enters Orbit with Tianzhou-1

  On April 20, China’s first cargo spacecraft Tianzhou-1 successfully entered orbit at 19:41. Developed by BIT, a cell culture and analysis load system based on space mircofluidic chip was sent into space with Tianzhou-1 and will work out the in-orbit experiment for two weeks. The highly integrated and automated innovation loading device will accomplish the task of multi cell co-culture and in-orbit analysis and detection under interference of the flight control.



  The loading system carried in Tianzhou-1 is developed by Deng Yulin, professor of the School of Life Science in BIT and academician of the International Academy of Astronautics, together with his team. And this is also the third time for the life science loading system flying into the space after its first try with 2011 Shenzhou-8 and the time with Changzheng-7. The high integrated and automated device is designed not only to meet the rigorous standards of on-board flight, but to finish the task of co-cultivation of nerve cells and Immune cells as well as in-orbit analysis, detection, data processing and transfer with unmanned operation. Researchers try to find the new interaction between nerve system and immune system under the space microgravity environment by comparing the results of the system of space device and those in the same equipment on earth. The new findings will help to protect the health of the astronauts during their long-time flight in orbit, which is good for both the aerospace engineering and human health.



  The loading system device is a highlight of Tianzhou-1 carrying projects. This life science experiment platform is independently developed by teams of BIT, and obtained many original technological innovation achievement. The project is supported by the special fund for major scientific instruments development of the Ministry of Science and Technology and is a form of achievement of the national special program, Development and Application of Space Multi-Indicator Biological Analysis Instrument . And the innovation of the device is highly praised by the expert team on the review session early this year.



  The biological and medical engineering major in BIT has formed its own features and showed its technological strength in instruments, automatic control, electronic information and life science as well as cross and integration of medical science. Young backbone teachers like Li Xiaoqiong, Ma Hong and outstanding graduate students like Yang Chunhua play an important role and carry on the main tasks in the research. And the successful loading task is hugely supported by China Academy of Space Technology. BIT has served for the national major strategy and engineering for a long time and formed its discipline characteristics and advantages, so as to expand the influence internationally and domestically, which greatly contributes to the “double-top” construction of the university.
