On the morning of Feb. 18th, 2019, Dr Even M. Zhao of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Princeton University, was invited to give an academic lecture titled “Light-Dependent Pathway Enhancement for Microbial Chemical Production” at Department of Biochemical Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT). Professor Li Chun presided over the lecture. Teachers and graduated students from School of Chemistry and chemical Engineering, Qiushi College, Tianjin University, more than 50 people attended the lecture.

Dr Evan M. Zhao first briefly introduced the content and background of the lecture, which revolved around the activity regulation of enzymes and cells, the key point of microbial chemical production under optogenetic regulation. Acute light-dependent pathway was designed in saccharomyces cerevisiae and the principle was presented.

Dr. Evan M. Zhao used the pathway regulation and production of iso-butyl alcohol and ethanol as an example to further introduced that pulse illumination could control the expression level or duration of enzymes exactly and then control the efficient synthesis of so-butyl alcohol. Optogenetic regulation could simplify the screening of optimal proportion of enzymes in metabolic pathway and achieve new time-varying control. Then Dr. Zhao further discussed the feasibility and challenge of mass production to use optogenetic regulation in industrial level, and the broad prospects and potential applications for pulse illumination in microbial production. In the end, Dr. Zhao shared his experience of starting a business.

Dr Evan M. Zhao’s lecture was content-rich and close to students’ research, so as to widen students’ train of thought. During the discussion, teachers and students exchanged ideas on questions of common interest.

Personal Profile of the Speaker:
