Beijing Institute of Technology, Dec 13th, 2019: Recently, the research result Green Supply Chain Management in Chinese Firms: Innovative Measures and the Moderating Role of Quick Response Technology in cooperation between Professor Li Guo (first author) and Dr. Li Lin of the School of Management and Economics of Beijing Institute of Technology, etc., is published online in the Journal of Operations Management, an international top management journal. The research results were completed by the team led by Professor Li Guo in collaboration with Professor Tsan-Ming Choi of Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Professor Suresh P. Sethi of the University of Texas at Dallas.

Study of classical supply chain management indicates that cost control is an important means to improve the performance of supply chain operations. However, as the concept of sustainable development continues to gain popularity, is the cost factor still a major obstacle for companies to practice green supply chain management? By combining empirical data from Chinese companies, Professor Li Guo's team at Beijing Institute of Technology was the first to reveal that different from traditional supply chain management, the key to improving the performance of green supply chain management is the external demand side. In order to effectively improve the performance level of green supply chain management, companies should focus on market factors on the external demand side rather than cost control on the internal supply side. The study further pointed out that strengthening the environmental awareness of demand-side consumers will not only promote the improvement of corporate’s environmental performance, but also improve corporate’s economic and operational performance. The study also found that rapid response technology reduces the negative impact of internal practices on economic performance. Therefore, while the government issues policies to guide enterprises, it is more necessary to take measures to further promote the concept of environmental protection markets. Companies should actively adopt green supply chain management practices and introduce rapid response technologies to reduce related negative effects. This research enriched and improved the theoretical system of balance between both the supply and demand sides in supply chain management research, provided quantitative decision basis and management support for Chinese enterprises to further improve the level of green supply chain management. It is also an positive response in the basic national policy of Comrade Xi Jinping in the report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China: "To uphold the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, we must establish and practice the concept that green mountains and green mountains are the golden mountains and the silver mountains, and we must save resources and protect the environment.".
