Professor Toshio Fukuda From BIT is elected as President of IEEE

  Recently, the Insititute of Electrial and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) announced the result of 2019 president election. After the discussion of the board of director, full-time professor Beijing Institute of Technology(BIT), doctoral supervisor, foreign academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and IEEE lifelong associate Professor Toshio Fukuda was elected 2020 President of IEEE.

  All the former IEEE Presidents are from western countries. Toshio Fukuda is the first Asian candidate, who has got the nomination through vote of members and competed with two competitive western candidates for the position. The whole election gained high attention and was strongly supported by China Association of Science and Technology, China Electronics Society and BIT.

  IEEE focuses on development and researches in the field of electrical engineering, electronic engineering, computer engineering, communication, automation engineering and others. Currently, it has about 420 thousand members in over 160 countries worldwide and leads 38 professional societies including Robot and Automation Society and Computer Society. Publications represented by the series of IEEE Transactions are the most authoritative and influential international academic journal recognized in the electrical and electronic engineering field and the computer and control technology field.

  Toshio Fukuda has served in IEEE for more than 40 years and made great contribution to IEEE. This election will greatly promote the development of Chinese robots and helps them step onto the international stage.

 

【Personal Profile】

       Toshio Fukuda, full-time professor and doctoral supervisor of BIT and foreign academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. From 2013 to 2014, he served as Chairman of IEEE Area 10 (Asia-Pacific Region), from 2017 to present as Chairman of IEEE Area 10 (System and Control), Chairman of IEEE Nanotechnology Society (2002-2005), Chairman of IEEE Robot and Automation Society (1998-1999), and Editor-in-Chief of IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics (2000-2002). He has published 11 monographs and more than 200 papers in top journals in robotics and automation. SCI has been cited more than 4000 times and has won more than 80 important international academic awards, including the highest "Lifelong Achievement Award" in robotics and automation field issued by IEEE headquarters in 2010 and the highest "Friendship Award" issued by the Chinese Government in 2014 for the recognition of foreign experts with outstanding contributions. He is currently the director of the Joint Laboratory of International Cooperation on Humanoid Robots and Systems of the Ministry of Education and the Academic Steering Committee of Beijing Intelligent Robots and Systems High-end Innovation Center.
