Beijing Institute of Technology has been offering adult higher education since 1956. The School of Adult Education was founded in 1988. Based on the foundation of School of Adult Education, in 2000 the School of Long Distance Education was established and approved to be a pilot model of modern long distance education by the Ministry of Education. In 2001, the School of Adult Education was renamed as the School of Continuing Education.
The School of Continuing Education adopts the concepts of encouraging reform, strengthening administration, improving teaching quality and focusing on efficiency and benefit. Armed with complete devotion to education and a strict teaching administration, the School of Continuing Education¡¯s mission is to guarantee teaching quality and cultivate talents. With the full utilization of BIT¡¯s expertise and resources, the School of Continuing Education is offering 5 major divisions in Mechanics, Electronics, Economics, Administration and Law with a total of 22 different majors. It offers a multitude of associate, bachelor degrees, and non-degrees and certificate programs. As an influential base of continuing education, it has cultivated countless talents in applied technology and administration for the national construction and defense of China. Currently, the School of Continuing Education has established 15 teaching correspondence schools and 40 long distance education learning centers. At present the number of students studying in adult education programs is approximately over 8000, the same as that of students studying in long distance education programs.
The School of Continuing Education of BIT attaches great importance to Sino-Foreign cooperative exchange programs. In the beginning of 2000, the School became a member of the International Association for Continuing Engineering Education (ACEE). Currently, there are three well established Sino-Foreign programs: Utah State University (USU) in the USA and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Canada for bachelor¡¯s degrees, and Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) in Germany for Master of Science.
The BIT School of Continuing Education is the executive unit of Continuing Education in Engineering of China, the standing executive unit of both Beijing Institute of Continuing Education and Institute of Continuing Engineering Education of Chinese Universities, and the head unit of Association of Higher Continuing Education of Beijing.
Furthermore, the School of Continuing Education stresses on cultivating students¡¯ comprehensive abilities, training their specialized skills and improving teaching quality. It was awarded many times by the Chinese Minister of Education, the Beijing Education Department and other administrative departments in education. Enjoying an exceptional reputation, the School of Continuing Education was noted as the Superior Institute of National Higher Adult Education, the Superior Group of Beijing Continuing Education and accredited as an Excellent School in the Evaluation of National Higher Adult Education.
