School of Information Science and Technology
(2005-06-20)

School of Information Science and Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology was established in July 2002 by integrating the original Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Automatic Control, Department of Photo-electric Engineering, and Department of Electronic Engineering. This is an important measure of organization reform for the university to fit in with the development of higher education and science and technology; to adapt to the demands of future processes for social information and intelligence; and to promote rapid progress and discipline-crossing in information science disciplines. The first-grade disciplines it contains cover precisely the four big components of information sciences defined by Ministry of Science & Technology and National Fund Commission: electronics and semi-conductor micro-electronics, photonics and photo-electronics, computer science, and automatic sciences. The School will take discipline construction as its focus, and work hard to achieve big progress in teaching qualities, scientific researches, management standards, benefits of running the school and international exchanges and cooperation, so as to improve the overall strength of the university in the area of information science and technology.

Discipline System

The School of Information Science and Technology has a complete and perfect system (Table 1) and a reasonable distribution of specialty structure (Table 2), with its principal disciplines covering six first-grade disciplines. Currently, in the School, there are over 5300 undergraduates, 1480 master-degree students, 606 doctoral students, and 13 post-doctoral students.

The above disciplines and specialties are basically ¡°211 Project¡± Phase I key construction programs of Beijing Institute of Technology, and are also the key construction programs of ¡°211 Project¡± Phase II and ¡°985 Project¡±. During the ¡°Tenth Five¨CYear Plan¡± period, the investment for discipline construction of the School will exceed 60 million Yuan for further development and expansion.

Academic Echelon

The teacher contingent of the School is enormous. At present there are over 450 teachers and staff, among whom are 4 academicians of Chinese Academy of Science /Academy of Engineering, 4 specially invited professor posts for National Changjiang Awards, 73 supervisors of Ph.D., 105 professors, over 140 associate professors, with over 100 teachers being Ph.D.

Scientific Research

The School has an overall superiority in carrying out interdisciplinary major research projects. Now it is committed to undertake the projects of National 973 Plan, 863 Plan, National Natural Science Fund, National Defense Model Equipment, National Defense Science and Technology Specialized Items, National Defense Key Pre-research, National Defense Pre-research Fund, National Defense Working Commission of Science Basic Research, National Defense Working Commission of Science Fund, special items and funds of Ministry of Education, as well as Beijing Science and Technology Plan and Olympiad Plan, Province-University Collaboration Plans and other projects of scientific research and development, and has completed a range of major/key scientific research projects. The area covered by scientific research is broad, and the potential of the foundation and applied foundation is big. In 2002, the School had a total expenditure for R&D 83.66 million Yuan, and won one First Grade Prize of National Science and Technology Development Award, one First Grade Prize, 2 Second Grade Prizes and 3 Third Grade Prizes of National Defense Science and Technology Development Awards, 3 national invention patents and 12 filings for national invention patents.

Laboratory Conditions

The School of Information Science and Technology occupies an area for laboratories near 30,000 square meters. It offers two national key discipline specialty laboratories (¡°Signal Collection and Processing Laboratory¡± and ¡°Color Science and Engineering Laboratory¡±), ¡°Information Optics Open Laboratory¡± of Ministry of Education, as well as two Beijing key laboratories (¡°Mode Recognition and Intelligence System Laboratory¡± and ¡°Intelligence Information Technology Laboratory¡±. It is responsible for the laboratory teaching centers facing to the whole university including ¡°Three Electric Center¡± and ¡° Computer Center¡±. The scientific research laboratories, research institutes, and research centers of the School provide a good laboratory foundation and scientific research environment for the discipline programs to undertake high level scientific research and to train upper grade professionals as well as for the external service and development.
