The precursor of School of Chemical Engineering and Environment is the chemical engineering department of Yan¡¯an Natural Science College which was founded in 1940. Afterwards it had experienced many changes. In 1952 it was renamed as ¡°Chemical Engineering Department of Beijing Institute of Technology¡±. To adapt to the reform demand, it was ratified as ¡°School of Chemical Engineering and Materials¡± by the Machine & Electricity Ministry in January 1991. To meet the need to construct a first ¨Cclass university, it became ¡°School of Chemical Engineering and the Environment of Beijing Institute of Technology¡± in July 2002.
There are three departments in the School: Department of Chemical Engineering and Control, Department of Applied Chemistry and pharmaceuticals, Department of Environment and Energy. The School also set up ¡°Industrial Ecosystem Institute¡±, ¡°BIT R&D Center for Pharmaceuticals¡±, ¡°R & D Center for Fine Chemicals and National High-Tech Green Material Development Center. ¡±.
To strengthen the teaching and research ability, the School has established many laboratories such as ¡°The Lab of Chemical engineering principle ¡±, ¡°The Lab of Industry Automatization¡±, ¡°The Lab of Fine Chemicals¡±, ¡°The Lab of Pharmaceuticals ¡± and ¡°The Lab of Environmental Engineering¡±, ¡°Computer Center¡±. Among which, ¡°Environmental Engineering Laboratory¡± has been ratified as Beijing municipal key laboratory. Every laboratory is equipped with many sophisticated instruments, its fixed assets is over 25 million RMB.
Based on the discipline of ¡°Applied Chemistry¡± the School of Chemical Engineering and the Environment takes ¡°Green Energy Source¡± as its distinguished feature, and ¡°Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology¡± as construction focus, all the disciplines are developing harmoniously. The School has built an integrated system of teaching and scientific research, in which ¡°Applied Chemistry¡± is a national key discipline, which measures up to world advanced standard, and ¡°Environmental Engineering¡± is at the leading level of the country. The School offers ¡°Specially Engaged Professor¡¯s Post¡± for Applied Chemistry¡¯s ¡°Changjiang Scholar¡±. ¡°Chemical Technology¡±, ¡°Environmental Engineering¡± and ¡°Applied Chemistry¡± are authorized doctorate discipline, and ¡°Chemical Engineering and Technology postdoctoral station¡± has been set up. It also supplies Master¡¯s degree programs for Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Technology, Industrial Catalysis Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Detecting Technique and Automatic Device and Control theory and Control Engineering; The School also open various specialties for Bachelor students such as Processing Units and Control Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology (specified in Industrial Automation), Chemical Engineering and Technology (specified in Fine Chemicals). Applied Chemistry (Engineering course), Pharmaceuticals Engineering and Environmental Engineering. Besides, the School has also Engineering-Master class of ¡°Chemical Engineering¡± and ¡°Environmental Engineering¡±, in which co-educational programs are set up with the British Queen¡¯s University and German Cottbus University; All together there are about 800 students in the School.
The School has 87 faculty and staff members, including 9 supervisors for doctorate program,18 professors and 33 associate professors. Of the 87 members, 90% teachers are younger than 50 years old; 51 young teachers have doctorate degrees, which is 78.5% of the faculty. The School complies most excellent science masters and famous scholars to lead the academic committee, and a group of academicians, and experts at home or aboard are engaged as honorable or concurrent professions or doctor advisors. Under the university¡¯s constructive programs such as the ¡°985 Project¡±, ¡°211 Project¡±, the School has built up modernized scientific research plat forms which gave strong support to many important research projects from ¡°National Nature Science Foundation¡±, ¡°National High-tech committee (the so-called ¡°863 Project¡± and ¡°973 Project¡±). Also, many projects are given by the industrial enterprises. Many of the research results have been put into production and brought out remarkable economic and social beneficial results.
The School lays stress on academic exchanges and has cooperation with famous universities in the world. The School exchanges visiting scholars with universities of the U.S.A., Britain, Germany, France and Italy. For example, a jointed program for Bachelor is being carried out by BIT and the University of Cottbus in Germany, and there are also Master¡¯s and Doctorate programs with British Queen¡¯s University and Italian Parma University.
To be scientific and effective in administration and education is one of the valuable traditions of the School of Chemical Engineering and the Environment. All the departments pay great attention to offering considerate service and guidance to all the students, so as to create a favorable learning environment. The students have made great progress in their study after they came to our School, and the results of their tests always rank top in BIT.
Entering the new millennium, the School will persevere its convention and take every effort to open a brilliant future. According to the plan of our School, we will rebuild the Chemical Engineering Building. The School will come to its new era. We cordially welcome excellent students to study in our School, and welcome eminent academicians to join with us to create a brighter future.
