The School of Mechanical & Vehicular Engineering consists of Department of Vehicle Engineering, Department of Thermal Energy & Dynamics Engineering, Department of Mechanical Manufacturing & Automation, Department of Transport Engineering, and such teaching or research units as the Basic Department of Mechatronic Science, Training Center for the Integration of Mechanic & Electronics, Training Center for Engineering, Workshop for Trial Manufacture of Research Results. It has 13 doctoral degree research fields, 17 Master degree research fields, and undergraduate programs cover Vehicle Engineering, Thermal Energy & Power Engineering, Mechanical Engineering & Automation, Industrial Engineering, Transport Engineering and Transportation. It also has 1 specialty for the higher vocational studies, 2 post-doctoral research fields and 1 municipal key discipline of Beijing, 2 disciplines oriented to National Changjiang Scholarship professors. At present, there are totally 2,500 full-time students in the School.

The School enjoys a faculty of reciprocal knowledge frame, reasonable age structure, and high education level. And it has 340 faculty and staff, including 50 professors and 95 associate professors.

The School has reached the leading level domestically in the field of vehicle transmission, vehicular electronics, vehicle suspension, new concept vehicles, high-power diesel engine, CAD/CAM integrated manufacture, mechatronic controlling & automation, advanced cutting, inspecting and examining and the technology of robots, especially the technology of Vehicle transmission and new concept vehicles have reached the international advanced levels. For the recent ten years, the School has won 50 prizes and awards at state level or provincial level and has published more than 100 monographs.

The School has built a batch of well-equipped specialty labs including the National Key Laboratory for Vehicle Transmission and the Training Center of Engineering facing to all the students at BIT. The total asset of the equipments exceeds 300 million RMB, and the present area of labs under construction is over 20,000 square meters.
