General Information

School of Information and Electronics


  The School of Information and Electronics (the fifth school) of Beijing Institute of Technology was formerly known as the Department of Electronic Engineering (the fifth department) of Beijing Institute of Technology. Originally founded in 1953 as the Department of Radar Design and Manufacturing, it was among China’s first educational and research institutes in radar, remote control, and telemetry technologies. It became the Department of Radio Engineering in 1956, and was renamed to the Department of Electronic Engineering in 1971. In 2002, the School of Information Science and Technology was founded by the former Department of Electronic Engineering and four other departments. Department of Electronic Engineering (the fifth department of the first school) was reserved at that time. In 2008, it was finally restructured into the School of Information and Electronics. (see Figure 1) The school produced China’s first television transmitting equipment, first TV channel, first low-altitude radar altimeter.

  The school sets 9 research institutes and 1 experiment center: Institute of Signal and Image Processing, Institute of Communication Technology, Institute of Microwave Technology, Institute of Microelectronics Technology, Institute for Professional Processor Research, Institute of Radar Technology, Institute of Radar and Countermeasure Technology, Institute of Information Security and Countermeasure Technology, Institute for Fractional Signals and Systems Research, Electrical and Electronic Experiment Center. ( see Figure 2 )

  At present, the school has altogether over 2000 students, including more than 900 undergraduates, 800 postgraduates, 300 doctoral students, and 30 international students.

2.Discipline Structure

  The school sets two disciplines: Information and Communication Engineering (National Key Discipline, Primary Discipline Doctoral Program, Mobile Postdoctoral Station), Electronic Science and Technology (Beijing City Key Disciplines, Primary Discipline Doctoral Program, Mobile Postdoctoral Station); and 10 sub-disciplines(see Figure 3), including two Major National Defence Discipline: Communications and Information System, Signal and Information Processing. (see Figure 4)

  The school now has 4 undergraduate disciplines: Electronic and Information Engineering, Communication Engineering, Information Countermeasure Technology, Electronic Science and Technology. The Electronic and Information Engineering Major is listed as Beijing City Major Discipline, and is selected in the Excellent Engineers Education and Training Program; The Communication Engineering Major is listed as National Defence Major Discipline; The Information Confrontation Technology Major is listed as Ministry of Education’s Major Discipline, National Defence Major Discipline, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s Primary Discipline, and Beijing City Major Discipline.

  The school set Electronic Information Category undergraduate experimental class in 1994, which is the first education reform experimental class in the university. The class adopts specialized training programmes and teaching plans, so as to build unified management and specialized training.

3. Academic Team

  The school now has a faculty of over 210 teachers, among which are 35 senior title teachers (professors and researches), 72 vice-senior teachers, 48 doctoral supervisors (including 6 part-time doctoral supervisors), 1 fellow of the Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 National Thousand Talents Plan recipient, 3 (Visiting) Chang Jiang Scholars, 2 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars recipients, 3 National Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions, 1 National Key Basic Research and Development Plan of China (973 Program) Chief Scientist, 1 (State-level) Distinguished University Teacher, 2 National Hundred-Thousand and Ten-Thousand Talents Project recipients, 7 Ministry of Education “Trans-Century Training Program Foundation for Talents” recipient, 2 Ministry of National Defence Science and Technology “511 Project” recipient, 1 National Innovation Talent Promotion Plan “Young and Middle-aged Science & Technology Leading Talents” recipient, and 1 Beijing One Hundred Leading Talent Cultivation Project of Science and Technology recipient.

  The school also has 2 National Teaching Teams, 2 Ministry of Education “Scholars and Innovative Research Teams in University”, 2 National Defence Science and Technology Innovation Teams, 1 National Nature Science Foundation of China “Innovation Research Group”, and 2 Beijing City Excellent Teaching Teams. (see Figure 5)

4.Scientific Researches

  The school embraces strong scientific research ability that covers large research fields and holds great applicable potential. The school holds more than 10 key national research projects such as the “863 Project”, “973 Project”, National Natural Science Foundation projects, Key Tasks of the National Science and Technology, National Defence Pre-research Foundation projects, National Defence Basic Researches, and more than 200 joint scientific and technology projects. The annual scientific research funds exceed 200 million yuan. In the last 3 years, the school has won 1 National Scientific and Technological Progress Awards First Prize, and 1 Second Prize, 18 Provincial Science and Technology Achievement Awards, and published more than 200 SCI papers.

  With more than 24,000 m2 of floor used for laboratories, and more than 114-million-yuan laboratory devices, the school provides solid environments and assurance for laboratory teaching, education innovation and scientific researches. In addition, the school has established National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center “Electric and Electronic Experimental Teaching Center”, “Satellite Navigation Electronic Information Technology” Key Lab of Ministry of Education, “Multi-element Information System” National Defence Key Discipline Laboratory, “Signal Acquisition and Processing” National Key Discipline Laboratory, “Embedded Real-time Information Processing Technology” Beijing City Key Laboratory, “Millimeter-wave and Terahertz Technology” Beijing City Key Laboratory, “Fractional Signals and Systems” Beijing City Key Laboratory, “Silicon Based High Speed Chip System” Beijing City Engineering Research Center, “Information System and Security Countermeasure Experiment Center” and “Electronic Information Technology Experiment Center” two university-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, and multiple college-enterprise joint laboratories.

5. Cooperation and Communication

  The school keeps wide communications and contacts with over 10 universities, multiple research institutes and enterprises in Countries and Regions such as America, England, Canada, Sweden, Spain, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and has developed friendly and resultful cooperates in academic communication, talent cultivation, teacher development, and scientific research with these institutes. The school has held an Electronics Engineering undergraduate education project with University of Central Lancashire; established the Digital Communication Technology Research Center with Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson; and built a joint laboratory with American companies TI, Agilent, and Mentor Graphics. In 2014, the “New System Radar Theory and Key Technology Innovation and Intelligence Base” (“Programme of Introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities”, “111 Programme” for short) was approved. And it will provide solid support for the internationalization of the school, the cultivation of young teachers and the introducing of high-level talents.

  At present, the school closely focuses on the university’s lofty goal of building a “World Class University” and the development strategy of “Enhance ground military technology, spread the reputation, and develop aero technology”. The school will exert the inherent power of information technology, focus on the two core issues of high level discipline construction and high quality talents cultivation, shape academic specialty, vantage with passion, and do the best to construct a “first-class information technology school”.
