School of Information and Electronics

The School of Information and Electronics at the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) was established in 1953 as China's first institution specializing in radar design and manufacturing. It is a pioneer in radar and remote sensing research and talent cultivation in China.

The school has a national key discipline in information and communication engineering and leads the construction of the discipline group of information science and technology. It offers two national first-class undergraduate programs in electronic information engineering and communication engineering. The school has received national-level teaching achievement awards, including one special award, as well as provincial-level teaching achievement awards. In 2021, it received three awards, including one first prize, at the inaugural National Excellent Textbook Awards.

The faculty of the school has gathered more than 50 national high-level talents. It includes four full-time academicians and 23 national-level leading talents. The school also has ten national/provincial-level innovation teams.

The school's laboratory covers an area of approximately 12,000 square meters, with equipment worth over 400 million yuan. It has a national key laboratory sub-center, an experimental teaching demonstration center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, a key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, and more. These high-level teaching and research platforms provide strong support for scientific research and talent cultivation.

In the past nearly 70 years, the school has achieved remarkable success. It has nurtured over 20,000 graduates, including eight recipients of China's highest scientific and technological award, who are also members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The school has also produced two major generals and 15 senior colonels in the military. Many of its graduates have become university presidents or vice-presidents. Furthermore, the school has cultivated over 100 leading figures in various industries and outstanding professionals in enterprises. Notable examples include the general manager of China Weapons Equipment Group Co, the deputy general manager of China Satellite Communications Group Co, the general manager of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, and recipients of prestigious awards from Huawei Technologies Co and the CEO of Honor Terminal Co.

The school has achieved several "firsts" in the history of science and technology in China, including the first television transmission and receiving device, the first low-altitude measurement radar, the first phased array radar system, the first microwave imaging on-board processing system, the first microwave radar signal processing system for space rendezvous and docking measurement, and the first on-orbit measurement device for satellite communication arrays. These achievements have served major national projects in areas such as homeland security, space remote sensing, manned spaceflight, and satellite navigation. The school is currently leading the construction of the "China Compound Eye" - a large-aperture deep space detection radar network. Since 2011, the school has led teams to win one first prize and five second prizes of the National Technology Invention Awards.

The school follows an open and inclusive, cutting-edge, and cross-disciplinary approach to international talent training. It has established joint training and exchange programs with renowned universities like Cambridge, Oxford, the National University of Singapore, and Chalmers University of Technology. It has also partnered with institutions and companies like Ericsson to establish joint bases for international talent training and industry-university-research cooperation.
