School of Optics and Photonics

The School of Optoelectronics, originally known as the Department of Precision Instruments, was established in 1953. It is one of the pioneering institutions in China that focus on teaching and research in the field of optical engineering. Currently, the school comprises of four research institutes, one experiment center, and one experiment base. These include the Research Institute of Optoelectronic Instruments, the Research Institute of Optoelectronic Information and Color Science, the Research Institute of Optoelectronics, the Research Institute of Optoelectronic Imaging and Information Engineering, the Optoelectronic Teaching Experiment Center, and the Innovative Education and Experiment Base of Optoelectronics.

The school has 138 faculty members, including one academician, 37 professors, and 49 associate professors. It has 780 undergraduate students, 375 master candidates, and 241 Ph.D. candidates. The school has received funding for numerous research projects from organizations such as the NSFC, National High Tech Programs, and Important National Science & Technology Specific Projects. Collaborative projects and academic exchanges have been established with renowned universities, research institutes, and industries. The average research fund is 70 million yuan per year. The school has also appointed many outstanding scholars and scientists as honorary or guest professors.

The school offers a unique four-year undergraduate degree program that offers a bachelor's degree of science in engineering in three majors: measurement and control technology and instrument, optical information and technology (including remote sensing science and technology), and electronic science and technology (mainly on optoelectronics).

The school's graduate program offers three majors: instrument science and technology, electronic science and technology, and optical engineering. It prioritizes high-quality education and research, equipping students for careers in research and advanced development.

The school has two national key disciplines and one provincial key discipline. It offers 59 undergraduate courses, 61 graduate courses, and one undergraduate course taught in English. One course has been awarded as a national-level excellent one.

The school has one National Key Discipline Specific Laboratory - Color Science and Engineering; one Open Laboratory of the Ministry of Education of China - Information Optics Fundamentals; and one Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education of China - Photoelectric Imaging Technology and Systems.

The school has established partnerships with several renowned universities and research institutions globally, including the University of Rochester, New York University, Tokyo University, the Tokyo Institute of Technology, the University of Leeds, and St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University. Numerous international conferences have been hosted by the school. Currently, there are eight international students studying at the school, including six graduate students and two undergraduate students.
