School of Medical Technology

The School of Medical Technology was established in July 2021, to develop the discipline of biomedical engineering. It aims to explore new medical methods and innovative clinical technologies, with a focus on international frontiers and key technologies. The school utilizes science and technology to serve clinical medicine, aiming to create a unique discipline in biomedical engineering. Its goal is to cultivate innovative and leading talents in medical technology for the country.

In 2003, BIT established a master's degree program in biomedical engineering and introduced an undergraduate major in the field. In 2007, the school was recognized as a national defense characteristic discipline in space biology and medical engineering. In 2011, a doctoral degree program in biomedical engineering was established. In 2013, integrated medical engineering was approved as a key discipline by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology approved. It became a second-level discipline with independent enrollment for doctoral programs. In 2018, the university established the medical integration discipline cluster, and set up the Medical Integration Research Institute to consolidate the medical engineering resources of the entire university, and promote the development of biomedical engineering. In 2020, the biomedical engineering major was recognized as a national first-class program. In 2021, the university established the Medical Technology School and launched a dual-track degree program in biomedical engineering, for both medicine and engineering students. In 2023, BIT's clinical medicine discipline entered the top 1% globally in the ESI rankings.

The school of Medical Technology has a total of 206 staff members, with 88 of them being medical professionals at the BIT Hospital. There are 75 full-time teachers, including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two academicians of the International Academy of Astronautics, three national leading talents, and eight national young talents.

The school offers six disciplines: neurosciences and neuroengineering, aerospace biomedical engineering, laser/optical medical engineering, medical materials and tissue engineering, medical laboratory technology, and medical imaging technology. It also has three key laboratories at the provincial and ministerial level, and two innovation bases for collaborative development of medical products and achievement conversion.

The institution offers an undergraduate program in biomedical engineering and has a specialized class in medical engineering. They also have an integrated program in medical engineering, combining undergraduate, master's, and doctoral training. Starting in 2023, they established a "PUMC Class" (Peking Union Medical College Class) with Peking Union Medical College, offering a combined training program of 4 years (BIT undergraduate) + 4 years (PUMC direct doctoral program).

Additionally, the school has internship bases in over 20 medical institutions and leading medical technology companies. These bases provide clinical frontline scenario-based internships and practical teaching for students. In recent years, students there, guided by the faculty, have won nearly 80 awards in international, national, and provincial competitions.

In recent years, the school's faculty members have published nearly 60 papers in internationally renowned journals and have led or participated in 53 national scientific and technological projects, and received approximately 120 million yuan in research funding. Additionally, its faculty members have received national awards, and their patented technologies have been approved by the National Medical Products Administration. Overall, these achievements have greatly improved the quality and efficiency of healthcare services.
