BIT professor elected as national expert of IEC/SMB AI Governance Special Working Group

Professor Hong Yanqing from the School of Law of the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) has recently been elected as the national expert of the Artificial Intelligence Governance Special Working Group (ahG96) of the International Electrotechnical Commission Standards Management Bureau (IEC/SMB). Professor Hong is the only Chinese expert elected this time.

At the end of 2023, the IEC/SMB established the Artificial Intelligence Governance Special Working Group to summarize the technical achievements of AI seminars, coordinate standardization work in the field of AI and digital transformation, propose publicity and work plans for AI fields within the IEC, determine the priority areas of work for the SMB in AI governance and potential technologies, and propose a series of preliminary SMB AI activities and projects.

The IEC is one of the world's three most authoritative international standardization and conformity assessment organizations, and is responsible for developing international standards and conformity assessment procedures in the fields of electrical engineering, electronics, and related areas.

It plays a crucial role in facilitating international trade and promoting industrial development. China formally joined the IEC in 1957 and became a permanent member in 2011.
