BIT professor recognized as academician of German national engineering academy

Professor Wei Yiming is elected as fellow of the Acatech-German National Academy of Science and Engineering.

Professor Wei Yiming from Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) was among those who attended the certificate award ceremony for the newly elected fellows of the Acatech-German National Academy of Science and Engineering in Berlin on Oct 15.

Wei was himself elected a fellow of the academy in October last year, the only Chinese scholar to have that honor bestowed in 2023.

During the event, Professor Wei talked with academy president Jan Wörner, academician Thomas Weber, and Frank Behrendt, a recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award, as well as other academicians from German universities and research institutions. They discussed research progress in energy transition and global climate governance and explored potential future international collaborations.

The Acatech-German National Academy of Science and Engineering is the highest honorary and advisory academic institution in the field of engineering and technology in Germany. It conducts strategic research on important engineering science and technology issues, provides decision-making advice, and is dedicated to promoting the development of engineering science and technology. It has more than 600 fellows who are distinguished scientists from the fields of engineering, natural sciences, and humanities and social sciences.

Wei is an expert in energy and environmental systems engineering, with a long-standing commitment to research on carbon reduction, global climate governance, and higher education. He has led projects that have received the Ministry of Education's First Prize in Natural Science, First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress, National Teaching Achievement First Prize, and the Second Prize for the First National Excellent Textbook Award. Wei has been honored with awards such as the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize, National Innovation Award, Special Allowance from the State Council, China Youth Science and Technology Award, Beijing Excellent Teacher Award, and National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker Award.

Being consistently recognized as a highly cited researcher globally for multiple years, Professor Wei Yiming serves as the Coordinating Lead Author for the "Energy Systems" chapter of the third working group of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Sixth Assessment Report. He has received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (2004), been appointed as a Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor by the Ministry of Education (2008), and been selected for the National High-Level Talent Program. As a leading figure in academia, he has led the successful approval of the basic science center project (2024) from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and won the honor of innovative research group (2015).
