The Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research at the Beijing Institute of Technology (CEEP-BIT) has recently joined the United Nations Climate Change Universities Partnership Programme (UNUPP), and has been included in the program's list of partner institutions, becoming a Chinese member institution of the initiative.

Launched in 2020, UNUPP operates under the Nairobi Work Programme of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It serves as a key mechanism for cooperation among industry, academia and research under the convention, and is designed to bridge the gap between what university research supplies and what climate governance actually needs, aligning academic work with the demands of policymakers and practitioners.

Through research, innovation and policy practice, the program produces knowledge products and solutions tailored to different regions, supporting climate adaptation and the building of climate resilience around the world.

To date, it has brought together leading universities and research institutions active in climate research and policy from around the world, including Harvard University, Yale University and the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security.

CEEP-BIT has long worked on energy economics, climate change and environmental policy, building systematic research strength in the integrated assessment of climate change, carbon neutrality systems engineering, energy transition pathways and climate policy analysis — an agenda that closely matches the program's focus. After being granted UNFCCC observer status in 2023, the center's addition to the UNUPP partner list marks its closer cooperation with international climate governance bodies and a steadily growing international profile.

Through the UNUPP platform, the center will broaden its channels for engaging in UN climate change affairs, carrying out joint international research, translating climate governance findings into practice, and training graduate students in climate governance for international careers.

The partnership is expected to bring its research agenda into closer alignment with international policy debates. It aims to respond to the practical needs of global climate governance and contribute BIT's expertise to worldwide climate action and sustainable development.
