Introduction to School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE) of BIT
Materials science and technology is an important support for the development of the national economy and the basis for the development of high and new technologies such as aerospace, aviation, navigation, information and national defense. The discipline of materials science and engineering of the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) was established in 1952. In 1955, the discipline of materials science and engineering of BIT began to train postgraduates and became one of the first doctoral degree authorization centers and one of the first post-doctoral mobile stations. School of Materials Science & Engineering (SMSE) in BIT has been created in 2002 by merging materials-related parts from original School of Chemical Engineering and Materials (the part related to polymeric materials science and engineering), original School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation (the part related to materials science and engineering, materials molding and control engineering) and original University Center for Materials Research. In 2015, the original department of Environment and Energy Materials from School of Chemical Industry and Environment was merged into SMSE.
The discipline of Materials Science and Engineering of BIT is one of the national key construction disciplines of 211 project, 985 project, "Double First-Class" and A-level discipline in the national fourth round of subject evaluation. Materials discipline is ranked in the top 100 in 2019 QS World University Discipline Rankings, 58th in 2019 US news World University Discipline Rankings, and 112th in the 2019 ESI World Discipline Rankings.
On the one hand, the materials discipline of BIT focuses on the research of advanced special materials for equipment service under extreme conditions such as combustion, detonation, ultra-high speed and ultra-high temperature. On the other hand, it is committed to the cutting-edge research on the application and collaborative development of new materials such as new energy, flame retardant and photoelectric information. SMSE strives to establish the materials science and engineering discipline as a discipline with distinctive features, outstanding advantages, domestic first-class and international reputation.
Now SMSE has been composed with 7 different departments (centers), namely the Department of Materials Physics & Chemistry, the Department of Materials Processing Engineering, the Department of Polymeric Materials, the Department of Metals & Inorganic Nonmetals, the Department of Energy & Environmental Material, Flame Retardant Center and Advanced Materials Experimental center.
There are 193 full-time faculty and staff members including 139 full-time teachers, 50 professors and researchers, 63 associate professors, 82 doctoral supervisors (including part-time doctoral supervisors) and 147 master supervisors.
Since established, SMSE has undertaken various national scientific projects, such as "973", "863", National Key Science and Technology projects, and National Natural Science Foundation of China projects. In latest 5 years, SMSE has research fund of over 620 million yuan and the annual research fund per faculty is about 900 thousand yuan, wining 11 important awards such as the State Science and Technology Award and more than 30 Provincial Science and Technology Awards. The scientific research strength reaches the domestic leading position and the international advanced level, and has the ability to solve the national major engineering application problems in some specific fields.
