Introduction to School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (SCCE) of BIT
School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (SCCE) is originally developed from the former Department of Chemical Engineering of Yan’an Natural Science College, which was founded in 1940. Later, Department of Chemical Engineering of Yan’an Natural Science College merged with the Department of Chemical Engineering of University of the North to become the Department of Chemical Engineering of North China University. When the combining department moved to Beijing in 1950s, the Chemistry Department of the University of China and France was merged. In 1991, the merged department was rebuilt to the School of Chemical Engineering and Materials. In 2002, the Department of Polymer Materials was adjusted to the School of Materials, the Department of Biological Engineering to the School of Life Science, and the Department of Chemistry to the School of Science, School of Chemical Engineering & Environment was established. In June 2011, the School of Chemistry was established on the basis of the Chemistry Department of the School of Science. In June 2016, to strengthen the integration of science and technology, the School of Chemical Engineering & Environment and the School of Chemistry were merged to form the SCCE.There are about 143 faculty members in SCCE, among them are 110 full-time professors, 40 professors (researchers), 59 doctoral supervisors (including 14 part-time), 4 distinguished professors of Chang Jiang Scholars Program, 3 winners of National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, 1 leading Scientific and Technological Innovation talent and 1 top young talent of "10,000 Talents Plan" of the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the CPC, 6 selected candidates of the long-term, short-term and young talents “National Thousand Talents Plan” , 1 selected candidate of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 1 selected candidate of the National Level, 7 outstanding talents of New Century Excellent Talents of Education Ministry, 1 famous teaching teacher in Beijing and 1 Chang Jiang Innovation Group. Over 95% of the faculty members hold doctoral degrees and over 70% of the members own oversea research experience. At present, SCCE college has two first-level disciplines equipped with doctor's degree, master's degree and postdoctoral mobile station (disciplines of Chemical Engineering & Technology and Chemistry). SCCE is set up with 5 undergraduate specialties: Chemical Engineering and Technology, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Energy Chemistry, Chemistry and Applied Chemistry. Among them, Applied Chemistry is the national key discipline, Chemical Engineering & Technology, Physical Chemistry are the key discipline of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China (PRC), and Applied Chemistry is the key major of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the PRC. SCCE has about 750 undergraduates, 437 graduates and 245 doctoral students in school, with the ratio of postgraduate students to undergraduate students reaching 1:1. Over the years, SCCE has cultivated more than 15,000 graduates, among which, there are many outstanding alumni, such as academicians of the Chinese academy of sciences, provincial and ministerial leaders and leaders of public companies. In recent years, the employment rate of graduates has reached over 98%. SCCE presently is equipped with Basic Chemistry Beijing University Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Atomic and Molecular Cluster Science, Beijing Key Laboratory of Photoelectric Conversion Materials, Beijing Key Laboratory of Chemical Power and Green Catalysis, International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of Fuel cell distributed power generation technology, National "111" discipline Special Nanomolecule Science and Technology Innovation Base, China-Russia joint Energy Technology Center, joint research laboratory for New Energy and New Materials Research and Innovation Platform between Beijing institute of technology(BIT) and Queen's University Belfast. The abundant resources play an important role in innovative talents cultivation, scientific research and social services. SCCE aims at the forefront of international disciplines position. In the face of national or defense needs, SCCE strengthen the combination of characteristic science and technology disciplines, which are mainly involved in inorganic synthesis and advanced materials, nano materials, organic functional molecules, molecular design analysis and chemical sensing, biological functional molecular design, electrochemistry and green catalysis, chemical power supply, energy-containing materials, drug design, chemical process simulation and enhancement, etc. These disciplines not only cover the major fields of modern chemistry and chemical engineering, but also include the latest growth points in the 21st century for the major national defense needs in the fields of materials, energy and environment. Among them, the polymetallic oxygen cluster chemistry, nano materials chemistry, design and preparation of energy-containing molecules, theoretical chemistry, spectroscopy, lithium-ion batteries and fuel cell system, preparation & industrial promotion of plate denitration catalyst and endothermic high energy density fuel have reached the international advanced level, and have gradually formed distinctive research directions. In recent years, SCCE has been granted with over 120 national key projects, such as the “973 Plan”, “863 Plan”, National Science and Technology Cooperation Special Projects, National Defense Science and Technology Major Special Projects, and the National Natural Science Foundation. In the past five years, the scientific research fund of SCCE reaches more than 200 million yuan. Nearly 300 SCI papers are published every year, and nearly 50 national invention patents are applied for or authorized annually.
In recent years, the discipline construction of SCCE has achieved rapid development. The chemical engineering discipline ranks 101-150 in QS international rankings, and the chemical discipline ranks 301st in the global organization of ESI international evaluation system top1%, with overall international influence significantly improved. SCCE has become one of the important bases for scientific research and talent training in the field of chemistry and chemical engineering at home and abroad.
