The School of Aerospace Engineering was established at the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) on June 14.
The School of Aerospace Engineering, formerly known as the School of Astronautics established in 2008, has a history that can be traced back to the establishment of the Rocket and Missile Specialty and Mechanics Teaching and Research Office in the 1950s.
The school has always taken serving the nation's major strategic needs in aerospace, weaponry and other fields as its mission. It has developed distinct academic characteristics in the areas of across-region precision striking, aerospace propulsion, deep space exploration, unmanned intelligent swarms, and on-orbit services, etc, having cultivated a large number of outstanding talents for the nation's aerospace and key technology fields.
The "Low Altitude Technology and Engineering" major has now been established at the school, with an enrollment quota of 100 students, ranking among the top six universities nationwide.
The school has closely aligned its efforts with the nation's major strategic needs, successfully completing the development of a series of aerospace equipment. It has supported the successful implementation of significant national missions such as the "Tianwen-2" probe, the Tianhe Core Module, and the launch of the "Long March-5" rocket. It has taken the lead in undertaking various national key projects, including national key R&D programs and key foundation-strengthening projects, and has received 10 national-level scientific and technological awards.
In recent years, in response to the strategic demands of the aerospace field, the school has been actively expanding into new disciplines and domains such as near-space vehicles, low-altitude technology, aerospace dynamics, and cross-domain flight. Leveraging resources from the Sino-Arab International Joint Laboratory, national and provincial key laboratories, the school has been continuously enriching the content of its disciplines in the near-space and low-altitude fields. The school has undertaken the construction task of the "State Key Laboratory of Environment Characteristics and Effects for Near-space", targeting the entire spatial domain from "low-altitude", "near-space" to "deep space", providing comprehensive support for national aerospace strategic talent development and research breakthroughs.
The school possesses an outstanding faculty team that includes academicians, national leading talents, national young talents, and provincial-level teaching masters. The proportion of national-level talents in the faculty is 30 percent, showcasing the high caliber of expertise and experience within the teaching staff.
BIT will focus on building the national strategic scientific and technological strength in the aerospace field to contribute its wisdom to the construction of a strong country by bravely taking on the new mission in the aerospace field and opening up a new journey in the aerospace industry.
